Indonesia Hosts the 10th International S-LCA Conference, the First in Asia-Pacific
JAKARTA, INDONESIA — Indonesia has been selected as the host for the 10th International Conference of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA 2026). The event takes place at JAPFA The Learning Centre (JTLC), Megamendung, Bogor, from June 17–19, 2026, with pre-events starting on June 16. The conference is organized by Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI) and JAPFA as the co-organizer.
This 10th conference marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the S-LCA conference is being held in the Asia-Pacific region, having previously been hosted exclusively in Europe and the Americas since its inception in 2010. Hosting this event in Indonesia is expected to strengthen dialogue regarding social sustainability and social impact assessment in developing nations. Enthusiasm for the conference is reflected in the submission of over 160 abstracts from more than 30 countries, spanning participation across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
Jessica Hanafi, PhD, from Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI), has been elected as Conference Chair. As the first S-LCA conference hosted in the Asia-Pacific, this achievement demonstrates that Global South nations are actively contributing to the advancement of S-LCA science and practice.
Over the past 11 years, LCI has developed various standards, methodologies, and practical solutions for industry implementation. Through close collaboration with academia, government, and industry, LCI acts as a bridge that connects theoretical frameworks and translates them into real-world applications. LCI hopes this conference will serve as a practical tool for industry and policymakers, providing vital input for future policy development.
Themed "Unity in Diversity", S-LCA 2026 serves as a platform for dialogue and networking, as well as a forum to discuss how sustainability assessment methodologies can operate harmoniously on a global scale by incorporating voices from the Global South—including Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This forum provides a dedicated space for practical experiences in Asia to exchange insights and align with international standards.
This international conference was officially opened by Prof. Rachmat Pambudy, Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, highlighting the critical intersection between robust scientific data and national strategic policy. It was highly encouraging to note that the Minister is aligned with LCI and Japfa on the importance of social LCA to measure the wellness of Indonesian people so we leave no one behind. Featuring 20 diverse sessions covering applications across more than 10 sectors, the conference is expected to provide vital insights for the development of sectoral Social LCA standards.
Jointly organised by LCI and Japfa, the 10th International Conference on Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA 2026) marks the largest S-LCA conference to date. It has drawn over 400 participants from 25 countries, comprising 55% from industry, 36% from academia, and the remainder representing government bodies and civil society organisations (NGOs). The conference serves as an ideal ecosystem to transform concepts, methodologies, and data into actionable, practical solutions for corporations.
As co-host, JAPFA’s involvement reflects the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable business practices that create positive social impact across the food value chain. Through its operations spanning agriculture, food production, and community development, JAPFA recognizes the importance of integrating social sustainability principles into business decision-making, supply chain management, and stakeholder engagement. Hosting S-LCA 2026 also aligns with JAPFA’s efforts to encourage cross-sector collaboration between industry, academia, policymakers, and international organizations in advancing more inclusive and responsible sustainability practices.
The meeting will bring together policymakers, industry representatives, and scientists to share innovations and real-world applications in social impact measurement across various sectors, including:
S-LCA Methodology Development
Agriculture and Food Systems
Energy and Mobility Transition
Infrastructure and Environment
Industrial Supply Chains
Sustainable Finance and Governance (ESG)
Jessica Hanafi, PhD, Conference Chair of S-LCA 2026, emphasised, “The purpose of this conference is to develop sector-relevant social standards, bridge the gap between theory and practice, and foster collaboration to drive unified change in the ecosystem. This presents a valuable opportunity to provide additional perspectives for developing international standards, such as ISO 14075, ensuring they better reflect the diverse contexts of different nations.
Over the course of three days, participants engage in a series of panel discussions, presentations, and supporting activities designed to expand their professional networks and deepen their knowledge of sustainability issues.
The conference will feature esteemed practitioners and academics in the field, including:
Prof. Dr. Ir. Rachmat Pambudy, M.S. (Minister of National Development Planning, Republic of Indonesia)
Prof. Dr. Matthias Finkbeiner (TU Berlin)
Prof. Dr. Marzia Traverso (RWTH Aachen)
Lany Harijanti (Global Reporting Initiative)
Salil Dutt (UNIDO)
Sebastiaan Stiller (EPD International AB)
